...ALL links and pics? CLICK! This room at The Birthplace is furnished with images which reference cross currents of culture residing in the artist's imagination or exposed by social experiences. A superficial image or symbol may report various concrete thematic ideas simultaneously. In an exploration of raw emotionality in color and form a diverse spiritual iconography is unveiled. Here the globe of American Suites is stretched to encompass remote ethnic margins, ancient tribal configurations, and overlap in a contemporary genre. The visual in art speaks with ears for exotic tongues and gestural rhythms.
"Susanoo God of the Wind"
is the original character portrait of a ferocious but endearing nature diety incorporated in two sequel works. The first, a monumental work entitled,
"Providence and Susanoo" pictures a mythic encounter of Destiny with the Wind as her suitor and mate. The art designed for exhibiton is an idea animated in nature, as "ARTSAIL".
The form and concept of the art on the waters moves into the action of the love story itself. This painting tells of a classic male and female encounter born out of the elements of circumstance. It has a perpetual happy ending molded in time, movement and art.
Another painting more fully illustrates the story of "Destiny and Susanno". Destiny, named Providence, peacefully floats in her imagination. The universe is a composite of the familiar poetic world of The Changing Stories Children. "Claire Sun Bird" shines"Toward Africa". King Swan alights at the rear of the
"Houseboat". Is this domicile on Mexican Mars; here are familiar red trees trimmed in neon yellow light, a crescent violet moon illuminates the horizon? Susanoo swims along side following his Destiny, a faithful mermaid posed near the cusp of his swelling oceanic wind.Shedding light on this union is "Claire Sun Bird" the first of a community of mythical tribesmen and animals we encounter on the way Toward Africa. There is a painting and a mask of this same image. In a poetic hybrid of sun, flower, and animal, this creature focuses contentment with observation. A fond bird which floats about the landscape legless, wingless and treeless, Claire gives off a light of sunshine across the vistas. Looking at this face one might wonder either if the sun sees us in the same glance that we see the sun; or, is the sun a superstition? But for now let us take a look over Claire's shoulder, so to speak, far into the distance where she comes from. There is Mystical Africa, the vast caldron of ancient spiritual quests, root cellar of modern civilzation. The fountain of faith and the fountain of languages are situated here. The origin of man, of peace and of conflict are reported here. The first figure we encounter on this walk back into the density of time is the immortal "Fisherman" sailing sideways across the great water, visage of man or fish? How did the visage of man and fish cross lines into the holy sphere of comprehension as God? We are compelled to ask and to start then with the first person we see.Now set in order to follow our task seeking knowledge of the Fisherman we swim and we walk along the Way when we meet a tribesman named
"Zimwee" reputed regional chief of seven tribes. By his own telling, we learn he has a brother, also named Zimwee, who governs a separate nomadic population that leads the seasonal cattle drive across the marsh plains. It is with his Brother that we can discover more counsel on Divinity.
